Wilderness Outreach Prayers for Men

A couple years ago in December during the Wilderness Outreach Advent hike, a friend of mine told me about the Confraternity of Angelic Warfare. I hadn’t heard of it before but it hooked right into me and I didn’t forget it.  In September of 2014 I finally hunted down the Dominican Prayers for Angelic Warfare that are at the heart of the confraternity. Since then I have prayed them only missing a day or two. They have been transformative for me. Most men struggle with lust and these prayers help us to see where this lust comes from, how it works in us, and how we can defend against it.

The Prayers for Angelic Warfare are for men and women, and as time went on I felt a need, as a man, to clarify them and make them more masculine specific. As men we live in a world filled with the fog of generalities where the genderless forces lie in wait to attack us below the conscious level, sneaking up and ‘striking at our heel’. As a result I started rewriting them specifically for men. Some of the prayers are more or less the same, some have been altered quite a bit, and I have added some others. I pray for the forgiveness of the Dominicans whose prayers I have used if they find offense in them. I only ask that if they do, they man up and call me out.

We have been created as men, specifically male, by God. The sensuality he created us with was meant for Holy procreation on the physical, intellectual and spiritual levels. Masculine integrity is living a life where that creative force is used only for those purposes. Evil understands the dangerous power that men have if we channel this power to do God’s work, and tempts men to short circuit this Holy force, by enslaving men into self-gratification, pornography, video games, fantasy football, sport hero and team worship, and other mindless distractions.  I pray that these prayers will help you in this battle and that you become a terrifying force for the One, the True, the Good and the Beautiful.

Wilderness Outreach Angelic Warfare Prayers

Opening prayer

Dear Jesus, God the Father created me as a man for the specific mission and duty to lead, provide, protect, and build His kingdom. He wrote on my heart the desires for the adventures of discovery, battle and creation. You were incarnate as the new Adam to show men how to wage war against evil on the interior and exterior battlefields. Evil, working through the world and corrupted people, has won many battles against me through the temptations of lust, self-gratification and mindless use of my time.  Through these it is evil’s plan to remove men from your Holy warfare by turning us into mindless slaves of the world. Dear Jesus I fully desire to be your soldier in this great battle that will wage until the end of times. Please send your grace and instruction into my heart that I may be transformed and transfigured into a Holy warrior strengthened with your courage, purity, chastity and integrity of heart. Amen

1. Dear Jesus, bless me with a life of Holy asceticism. Grant that I reject the corrupting and effeminizing influences of the consumer culture and nurture my masculine being with a life anchored in the rugged, holistic and organic environment of God’s creation. “Humility and ascetic hardship free a man from all sin, for the one cuts out the passions of the soul, the other those of the body.” St. Maximos the Confessor. For the intercession of our Holy Mother we pray, Hail Mary…

2. Dear Jesus, bless my masculine body. Grant that as an exterior expression of deep spiritual truths, my body is strong, agile, healthy and lean and that I honor it as the temple of the Holy Spirit. “We know that the whole creation has been groaning in travail together until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.” (Rom 8:22-23) For the intercession of our Holy Mother we pray, Hail Mary…

3. Dear Jesus, bless my diet. Grant that I consume only the food and drink that is required to maintain a healthy body, mind and spirit. “Their end is destruction, their god is the belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. But our commonwealth is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will change our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power which enables him even to subject all things to himself.” (Phil 3:19-21) For the intercession of our Holy Mother we pray, Hail Mary…

4. Dear Jesus, bless me with a vigorous and healthy exercise regimen. “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” I Corinthians 6: 19-20) For the intercession of our Holy Mother we pray, Hail Mary…

5. Dear Jesus, bless my capacities for natural and spiritual fatherhood. Grant me the knowledge and wisdom to understand the direction that my natural and spiritual children, brothers and sisters need for their journey to sainthood. Grant me the, docility, humility, courage and knowledge to lead, instruct, and correct them in the ways that are most helpful for their journey. Dt 6: 6-9 ‘And these words which I command you this day shall be upon your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. And you shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.  And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” Dt 6:6-9. For the intercession of our Holy Mother we pray, Hail Mary…

6. Dear Jesus, bless our social and cultural climate. Grant that our society may be purified of everything contrary to purity and chastity, and that I may have the strength to resist the pressures of prevailing distortions of self-gratification. “In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have conquered the world” (Jn 16:33). “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” (Rom 8:37). For the intercession of our Holy Mother we pray, Hail Mary…

7. Dear Jesus, bless my relationships. Grant that they will be holy, healthy, and honorable at all times. May I see everyman as your son and brother. May I see every woman as a daughter of God and your sister. “Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere love of the brethren, love one another earnestly from the heart” (1 Pet 1:22). For the intercession of our Holy Mother we pray,  Hail Mary…

8. Dear Jesus, bless my efforts at the custody of my eyes, thoughts, integrity of my soul. Grant that how I present and carry myself may veil what should be veiled, and give me the strength to resist evil distractions and the glamour of sin. “Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Rom 12:2). For the intercession of our Holy Mother we pray, Hail Mary…

9. Dear Jesus, bless my five senses. Grant that all of the things that I see, smell, hear, taste and feel are ordered toward purity and holiness and the strengthening of my manhood for the adventure of Your great work and Your great battle. “Seek the things that are above” (Col 3:1). For the intercession of our Holy Mother we pray, Hail Mary…

10. Dear Jesus, bless my sensuality. Grant that all of my feelings and impulses may be  transformed into a Holy desire and power to discover Your truths, fight Your battles, build Your kingdom, and to live a life of masculine integrity, purity and chastity. “In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood” (Heb 12:4). For the intercession of our Holy Mother we pray, Hail Mary…

11. Dear Jesus, bless my imagination. Grant that I may be preserved from the fantasies and daydreams that defile me, that all impure images may vanish, and that I may be protected from all the assaults of demons. Transform my imagination into a powerful force for Your work through me. Fill my imagination with visions of building God’s kingdom and the winning His battles. “Be renewed in the spirit of your minds” (Eph 6:11, 4:23). For the intercession of our Holy Mother we pray, Hail Mary…

12. Dear Jesus, bless my memory. Grant that no dark memories from my past may haunt me, but let your light shine within me to fill me with a healing hope in you. Fix in my heart the knowledge that You can heal all the wounds of sin and its memory. Receive the wounds of my memory into the most Holy wounds of your Body on the Cross thereby transforming them into fortresses of manhood, strength, goodness and creativity..  “And every one who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure” (1 Jn 3:1). For the intercession of our Holy Mother we pray, Hail Mary…

13. Dear Jesus, bless me with a power to protect my God given manhood. Grant that I may quickly sense dangers to the integrity, purity and chastity of my manhood, and instinctively defend myself from them. Help me to clearly sense the near occasion of sin and remove myself from it. Grant that I may never turn away from higher and more difficult goods for the sake of sinful self-indulgence. “For what shall it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?”  (Mk 8:36).  For the intercession of our Holy Mother we pray, Hail Mary…

14. Dear Jesus, bless my emotions. Grant that I may love the integrity, purity and chastity of my manhood and rejoice in it, that all of my emotions may be in harmony with what is right, and that no sadness, discouragement, fear, insecurity, or loneliness may afflict me into sexual sin. “For the grace of God has appeared, saving all and training us to reject godless ways and worldly passions and to live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age” (Titus 2:11-12). For the intercession of our Holy Mother we pray, Hail Mary…

15. Dear Jesus, bless my intellect. Grant that it may be purged of all false beliefs and all misunderstandings of human sexuality, self-gratification, and the ways of the world. Grant that the good angels may flood my intellect with thoughts of a life abounding in the adventure of discovery of the mystery and beauty of God’s universe. Fill my mind with thoughts that are true, honorable, just, pure, beautiful, and gracious. “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is beautiful, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things” (Phil 4:8). For the intercession of our Holy Mother we pray, Hail Mary…

16. Dear Jesus, bless my will. Grant that it may never be opposed by my sensuality and concupiscence, that it may never be conflicted in the moment, but that it may hold fast to the integrity, purity and chastity of my manhood, no matter how difficult it may be. “For the Son of God, Jesus Christ… was not Yes and No; but in him it is always Yes. For all the promises of God find their Yes in him” (2 Cor 1:19-20). For the intercession of our Holy Mother we pray, Hail Mary…

17. Dear Jesus, bless my conscience and intuition. Grant that they may be swift to judge what is true, pure and chaste, swifter to execute it, and preserved completely from the suggestions of demons. Bless me with a pure conscience that sees throught he lies and distortions of evil and its works. “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” (Heb 9:14) For the intercession of our Holy Mother we pray, Hail Mary…

18. Dear Jesus, bless my heart. Grant that the place where You, the Holy Spirit and God the Father eternally create my body and soul, becomes my Holy man cave, workshop and original solitude. Let this be the place I can come to join You, the Holy Spirit and God the Father, for protection, nourishment and instruction. “Jesus answered him, ‘If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him’ ” (Jn 14:23). For the intercession of our Holy Mother we pray, Hail Mary….

19. Dear Jesus, grant me the grace of self-surrender. Grant that I may hand over to God nothing less than my manhood, life, and work, for His direction in His Holy battles and the building of His kingdom. “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit” (Lk 23:46). For the intercession of our Holy Mother we pray, Hail Mary…

20. Dear Jesus, give me your love, correction and mentorship. Visualize for me and help me visualize a life of radical masculine discipleship for You and your kingdom. “In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the expiation for our sins” (1 Jn 4:10). “But God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us” (Rom 5:8). For the intercession of our Holy Mother we pray, Hail Mary…

21. Dear Jesus, bless my guardian Angel, grant that he rids me of the corruption of untrue and improper beliefs, thoughts and emotions. May he drive out all the suggestions of demons and defend me in their attacks. “St Michael the Archangel defend me in battle. Be my protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humble pray. And do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Hosts, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.” Hail Mary…

Closing Prayer

St Joseph, St John the Baptist, Saint Anthony of the Desert, St Benedict of Nursia, Saint Francis of Assisi, St Ignatius of Loyola, rugged and robust protectors of my manhood, I beseech you to pray to the most Holy Trinity that I, your brother may grow in the holiness of my manhood, fatherhood, and brotherhood, for which I was created. Also pray that I may grow in understanding and the accomplishment of the mission and duty of my life, by following the examples of your lives and the manhood of our Lord Jesus Christ. I pray this to God the Father though our Lord Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever, Amen.
